How to Prepare an Image for a 11 x 14 Portfolio Print using a Template

The instructions below were created as a tutorial to assist in the preparation of 11 inch by 14 inch images files to be printed for student portfolio. They were created for students that are not familiar with Adobe Photoshop and are subject to the disclaimer on the bottom of the page.

1. Download the Template

The first thing to do is download the templates for a single and/or double page print at:

www.albertofurtado.com/download/Single_Page_Template.tif

www.albertofurtado.com/download/Double_Page_Template.tif

These files are already 11 inches by 14 inches, portrait orientation, 8 bits, and with a sRGB profile as the printing company needs. They have guidelines that provide a 1 1/2 inch margin on top and on the sides and a 1 3/4 inch margin on the bottom.

2. Check if your image file is OK

Open your image in Photoshop. Go to Image -> Image Size and turn of the Resample option if is turned on. If the Resolution is not 300 change it to 300 Pixels/Inch. The Size of your Width and Height for a vertical image should be at least 8 inches by 10 inches. For a horizontal image only the width should be larger than 8 inches. If the Width and Height are not displayed in inches change the pull down menu to inches. If your image is smaller than this size you should try to obtain an image with a higher resolution. If it is OK cancel out of this box and proceed to crop the image.

3. Crop the Image to the Correct Size

(Vertical Image)

Click on the Crop tool in the left tools menu. Change the pull down menu on the top left to W x H x Resolution. Fill the fields next to it with 8 in, 10.75 in, and 300 px/in. Slide the corners and move the image to obtain the desired crop. Be careful not to chose a very small crop because there might not be enough information in the image to produce a good print. Hit Enter or press the check mark on the top to confirm the crop . Now the image is the correct size for the template.

(Horizontal Image)

For a horizontal image the height does not matter, but if you image has an original factor of 3×4 the size of your image for the template should be 8 in, 6.4 in, and 300 px/in. You can use the same instructions above just changing the crop fields.

4. Copy the Image to the Template

Open the template and your image in Photoshop. With your image selected Command-A (select) Command-C (copy). Change to the template image and Command-V. Your image should appear on top of the white background with the blue guidelines. Using the move tool position your image to align with the blue margins. The alignment should be perfect.

5. Save the Image for Print

On the top menu chose Layer-> Flatten Image. Then chose File->Save As and change the format to JPG. Change the name of the file to something that is easily recognizable and includes your name. This will make it easier for the printer if there is any problems or questions printing. Close the template image without saving so you can use it again.

6. Send the Image to the Printer
